This is one of those things that would be on a summer bucket list and it deserves to be in the top 5. I somehow have gone strawberry picking for as long as I can remember. So by now I know what I'm doing.
The best time to go in Canada would be early July with fairly sunny weather. You have to chose a row that no one is picking in and where the flag hasn't been moved, therefore your row isn't picked over. The strawberries are usually small but they are filled with a lot of flavour.
My grandma, sister and I always go to the Shouldice Berry Farm on Merivale Road. The prices aren't bad at all because its about $5 for a 2L basket and the little containers at the grocery store are $5.99 for only 1 quart (.946...L).

The essentials to have when picking would be: hat/sunscreen so you don't get burnt when being under the sun for up to an hour, water to say hydrated and a comfy outfit because if you wear jeans or something tight you won't be able to pick the strawberries.
If you live in/near Ottawa this is for sure something you should do this summer before they're gone.
